Ok, so I really had a blue sky for the background, but I lowered the exposure, and this is what I got, hope you like it. I was suprised with the kind of detail I was able to get out of a 300 mm focal length in the moon.
The ISO is a tricky thing to play around with, I really need a good digital to do that. i use film mostly atm, It's quite a drag really. Especially getting pictures onto here. Scanning from prints takes so much off the printed quality. Although I may be investing in a D40x in the next couple of months. WOOP.
I feel you dont really need to have the detail in this, you've photographed it better then we usually see the moon so you've accomplished something i think.
I have great respect for film photographers because so much is dependant on your settings. With the digital its so easy to change things after the fact. Though the ability to shoot so many shots, and get instant feedback is a wonderful thing. No waiting to see how they will turn out.
Anyway, thank you again, and I'm glad that you like this shot the way it is. I've been thinking of doing some more astrophotography, and your comments just give me more incentive.
yes. I'm very impressed by it . ha ha
ah i must try it, i have a nikon 300 mm lens so i'll have to give it a go next time the moon is bright.
i see what you mean about your SS. i thought it would have to be more then 1/320 - clever
I also had the ISO up to 1600 on this to gett he most light out of it, but I think I could have lowered the SS and the ISO to get a bit more detail possibly in this. I took a bunch of shots that evening, and wasn't going for something like this, but of all the ones I took and played with this worked the best for me. Give it a try, are you using film or digital?
Just a canon 30D, with a 75-300 mm lens. Believe I had it all the way to 300, tripod on it, and I sort of cheat on this. Its actually taken when the sun is just setting, but I changed the exposure down several stops to get the darkness, instead of the dark blue sky that is actually there. Thats why the shutter time isn't too long on this shot.
Thanks btw, I'm glad that you like it.
This pic is so darn cliche, and yet so rapturing!! Lol I love it, just because I love the moon. Yea I'm surprised you got such a good shot, too. It's not exactly the easiest subject to photograph. Good call on the "exposure-lowering". : D
